Our staff love being a part of the Habitat for Humanity of Tuolumne County Repair Program team and supporting such important and beneficial repairs that truly make the lives of Tuolumne County residents better. Just recently they were able to offer repair services to our local resident David.
Fortunately, in our community, organizations stay in contact with, and reach out to one another in order to provide help where it is needed most. David first heard of the Habitat for Humanity Repair Program and what it has to offer, through his social worker at Adventist Health-Sonora.
David was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma – a rare type of non-cancerous brain tumor near the pituitary gland. Due to his tumor, David began to lose his vision which hindered many daily activities, made daily life more complicated, his home unsafe, and in desperate need of repairs.
After being contacted through our partnership with Adventist Health – Sonora’s Project Hope program, Habitat completed a thorough assessment of his home and detailed which repairs would most help David feel safe, comfortable, and secure in his home.
In the first phase, Habitat focused on the stairs and decking to David’s front porch and entry leading into his home. By rebuilding the landing and stairs our Repair Program team was able to reinforce the safety and accessibility to David’s home. The second phase of David’s repair included the replacement of his rear entry door, also with new landing and stairs. This repair involved building a new wall to replace the existing sliding glass door and adding an outward swinging door with a window for natural light and additional health benefits.
David remarked how much he enjoyed having Habitat for Humanity of Tuolumne County’s Home Repair team out to his home and says the repairs “have given him peace of mind knowing his home is not only more safe and secure, but looks and feels better overall.”
