Kudos to Volunteer Construction Crew

Sonora, CA –In just 19 work days, our volunteer construction crew framed in the McKenzie family’s new two-story Habitat home. This has been a wonderful experience for the volunteers and the McKenzie clan. The volunteer team that showed up every week to make this happen consisted of Dave Turner (construction manager), Joe Salvo (crew leader), Grace Furiosi (volunteer hostess) and the following laborers: Bob Loll, David Bolles, Ray Pfoutz, Jim Floyd, Deana Zay (not pictured), Richard Feaster, Rick Bonde (not pictured), Dan Schroeder, Mal Perry (not pictured), Denice McKenzie, Frank Smart, Bob Hassard (not pictured), and Ben Kaczmarek.

When asked why he thought this was such a successful build, crew leader Joe Salvo said the many positive comments he’d heard all boiled down to the same common denominator: Dave Turner’s involvement as construction manager made this a great experience. Salvo added, “it also helps to have a home owner like Denice—so enthused over the whole thing & comes out whenever she can to help. And she really helps, we put her to work! Everyone likes her and she is so appreciative.”

Our volunteer hostess, Grace Furiosi has been at the build site ensuring we have proper paperwork for all volunteers and that “her crew” eats well. Although not part of her defined duties, Furiosi has been making gourmet lunches to fuel this dedicated crew. And on December 10 Furiosi hosted a thank-you luncheon at her home for the construction volunteers and their spouses. Each volunteer received a gratitude gift bag with a Habitat t-shirt and hat, Golden Hammer lapel pin, and a spun glass angel ornament.

Now the Habitat house is in the hands of pros: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and drywall folks will be working through December. In January, volunteers will be back to perform the finish work. With the existing crew and a work group from the Church of the 49ers in Columbia, we have a full complement of volunteers to complete Denice’s home. Thank you volunteers for your dedication to this project!
