Tuolumne CA - Roger Haughton, former CEO of PMI, and his wife Judy have made a very generous donation to Habitat for Humanity of Tuolumne County (HfHTC). In the words of Mr. Haughton, "We would like to contribute $100,000 to the Tuolumne County affiliate to support their efforts to provide home ownership opportunities in our community. We take pride in having helped build a Habitat house with other PMI employees a few years ago and since we have retirement residences in Twain Harte and Confidence, we want to continue our support of Tuolumne County Habitat."
The Haughtons, and Diana Juhlin (Leadership Development Officer from Habitat International) came to Sonora on November 16 to meet some of the HfHTC board members for lunch prior to presenting David Bolles (affiliate president) with a letter pledging $100,000 to HfHTC. The presentation took place at our most recently completed home: Habitat House #5. Along with board members and office staff, others who attended the presentation were many of the people who were involved in the construction of House #5: Dave Turner, construction manager; Joe Salvo, crew leader; Kurt Marinovich; donor of foundation; Dan Schroeder, construction volunteer; and Frank Smart, HfHTC founder.
This donation provides an infusion of cash and energy at a key time for HfHTC. We completed House #5 in July of this year and had great momentum from the success of that build and the gratitude of the McKenzie family. Local Habitat volunteer builders were ready to start on House #6, but with no land and limited funds, were not able to begin. A problem that has been facing the Tuolumne County Habitat affiliate is that the availability and price of building lots has become more and more out of reach with current resources. With this incredibly generous donation, we will now be able to buy land. However, we still have to raise funds in order to purchase materials and pay for some sub-contractors that will be needed for the next home.
If you are interested in donating financially toward the building of the next house or would like to volunteer to help construct it, please call the local Habitat for Humanity Office 536-0970 or visit our web site at www.habitattuolumne.org.
