Habitat buys Townhome Development in Columbia

Sep 25, 2009

It's true! Habitat for Humanity of Tuolumne County is now the owner of the Parrott's Ferry Village townhome development located near Columbia. This is the culmination of months of efforts. We received support from many in our County government as we educated ourselves on outstanding issues with the property.

Local contractor Dave Turner assisted us in talking with all the various agencies and in assuring us that this is a viable project. Roger Haughton contacted Habitat International to ask for a bridge loan to allow us to purchase the property. Habitat International agreed to the loan. Without all of this assistance we wouldn't be in the position to move forward with a development of this magnitude.

"Now comes the daunting task of raising money to pay off the bridge loan from Habitat International as well as raising money to build 36 townhomes for local low-income families" says Betsy Harden, the affiliates executive director who drove the purchase effort. "Once again, I must quote Margaret Mead, 'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever has.' Together, we can do this."
