Become a Homeowner
Program Information
Habitat for Humanity builds houses using volunteer labor and funds raised from local businesses, churches and individual donors. These houses are sold at no profit and with interest-free financing to a partner family chosen through a nondiscriminatory selection process.
Partner families can become a homeowner after they have completed 500 hours of sweat
equity and make a small down payment of $500. In addition, homeowners are required to pay monthly mortgage
payments and obtain homeowners insurance. We provide the interest-free mortgage.
You are eligible to apply if you meet the following four criteria:
-
Your income is less than 50 percent of the median family income for Tuolumne County and varies with the size of your family.
-
You have a need for simple, decent, adequate housing. For example, the living space may be too small for your family, or may be in poor repair, or may be too expensive.
-
You are able to pay for Habitat housing as well as to meet your other expenses. A standard three-bedroom Habitat house costs about $120,000. Our average homeowner spends $600-650 a month to own his or her house: principal, property taxes, and insurance.
-
You are willing to partner with us in building your house. We require 500 hours of sweat equity from each applicant by helping with construction or any other Habitat for Humanity activity.
How to Apply
We have recently selected our partner family for house number 6 to be built in Ponderosa Hills! The family selection process is now closed. If you are interested in being considered for a future Habitat home, your first step will be to attend an informational meeting where you can ask questions of a Habitat representative and pick up an application package.
At this time we are not holding prospecive homeowner meetings. They will start up again when we begin planning for house #7, sometime in early 2009.
